How to Choose a Domain Name for Your Business
A simple checklist for picking a short, memorable domain name — and deciding between .com, .ph and .com.ph.
Your domain name is the address customers type, share and remember. A good one makes your business easier to find and look more trustworthy. Here is the checklist I use with clients.
1. Keep it short and easy to say
If you have to spell it out on the phone, it is too complicated. Aim for something you can say once and people get it right. Use your business name, or your business name plus your city (for example brightsmilemandaue.com).
2. Avoid hyphens, numbers and odd spellings
Hyphens and numbers are easy to forget and easy to mistype. Creative spellings ("kwik" instead of "quick") send visitors to someone else's site.
3. Choose the right extension
- .com — the most familiar choice and works everywhere.
- .ph / .com.ph — signals a Philippine business, which helps local trust. Registered through the .ph registry or its resellers.
- If you can, register both your .com and .ph and point one to the other, so nobody else takes them.
4. Check before you buy
- Search the name on Facebook, Instagram and Google — make sure it is not already a well-known brand.
- Check that matching social media usernames are available, so your branding stays consistent.
5. Register it in your own name
Always register the domain with your (or your company's) name and email, turn on auto-renew, and keep the login safe. If a developer registers it for you, ask for the account access. Losing a domain because a renewal email went to someone else is a common and painful problem.
Next step
Once you have the domain, you only need to point it to your website with two DNS records. If you need help choosing a name or setting it up, send me a message.
