Local SEO Basics: Set Up Your Google Business Profile
How small businesses can show up in Google Maps and local searches with a complete Google Business Profile and a few website basics.
When someone searches "dentist near me" or "cafe in Cebu", Google shows a map with local businesses before the normal results. Getting into that map is called local SEO, and it starts with a free Google Business Profile.
1. Create or claim your profile
Go to google.com/business, search for your business and claim it (or create it). Google will ask you to verify that you own it.
2. Fill in everything
- The exact business name you use on your signage — no extra keywords.
- The correct primary category (for example "Dental clinic", not just "Clinic").
- Address or service area, phone number, opening hours and holiday hours.
- Your website address.
- Real photos: the outside (so people recognise it), the inside, your products or work, and your team.
3. Keep your details consistent
Your name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, Facebook page, Google profile and any directories. Consistency helps Google trust the information.
4. Ask happy customers for reviews
Share your review link after a good experience and reply politely to every review, including negative ones. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them — it breaks Google's rules.
5. Connect it to your website
- Put your address, phone number and opening hours on your website.
- Embed a map on your contact page.
- Mention the areas you serve naturally in your page text.
6. Keep it active
Post updates, offers and new photos from time to time, and keep your hours accurate. An up-to-date profile gives customers confidence.
